Sega Genesis, also known as Sega Mega Drive or just SMD is a 16-bit video game console developed and released by Sega and is referred to the fourth generation. The first release was held in Japan, the name of the console was Mega Drive, a year later it came to the United States under the name Genesis, and a year later released in other countries, again with the name Mega Drive. The name in the United States had to be replaced just because it was not possible to register a trademark – Mega Drive. As carriers for the games were used cartridges that could be inserted on the top of the console.
Sega Genesis not became very popular in Japan because of its main competitors (PC Engine and Super Famicom), however it was quite successful in the US and Europe. There it was able to compete with a variety of gaming devices and PCs/ This was possible, among other things, thankfully to the abundance and variety of interesting games, which were released more than 900. Actually, initially there were not a lot of games, however the amount steadily grew. Sega company as well as third-party developers were involved in games development. In addition, correctly chosen marketing approach has played a major role, according to which the console was positioned as a “cool fashionable console”, designed for teenagers.

The Sega Supermodel 2 board was released in 1993, and many great games were released for it. Games, like Virtual Fighter, Daytona USA, The House of the Dead, Virtual Cop, Virtual On to name a few. It was a very successful arcade board, and had very impressive graphics and 3d graphics capabilities. It had a 6 DSP math co-processors: 6× Fujitsu TGP MB8623, and this enabled this board to show off its impressive 3d graphics. Back in 1993, there were no 3d accelerators for console systems, and computers. Arcade games were superior to home video game console systems, and computers up until 1997. With the releases of console systems, like the Playstation 1, Sega Saturn, and 3d accelerators like the 3dfx Voodoo 3d graphics accelerators marked the end of arcade domination of the gaming market.
If you were old enough to remember the mid 1990s, you would see games that used this board, like Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop, Daytona USA, and House of the Dead. Those were games, you would see in most arcades at the time. Less and less people were going to arcades by the mid 1990s. The reason why people went to arcades in the mid 1990s was to play against or with other people. Back in the mid 1990s, most people used dial up internet which was very slow. People could play against others online with dial-up, but it wasn’t always ideal. There was a lot of lag, and performance issues. The Supermodel 2 board was a very successful arcade board, and it was the last arcade board that was commercially successful. The Supermodel 2 emulator was released in 2014, so it was recently released. You can download it from the Sega Retro site. https://segaretro.org/Model_2_Emulator You will need a fast computer to run. I ran it on my I7-4790 with a Geforce GTX 770, and it ran fine.
